A Cavity-Fighting Liquid That May Help Kids Avoid Injections & Drills

At Hello Kids Dentistry, we utilize the most innovative technology in treatment of dental disease. Especially in younger children, it can be very challenging to treat dental disease without risky and sometimes costly interventions, until now! There is a new medicine that allows arresting or stopping of a cavity at its base and prevent the cavity from getting bigger. Here is a little bit of information about this new tool.
Nobody looks forward to having a cavity drilled and filled by a dentist. Now there’s an alternative: an antimicrobial liquid that can be brushed on cavities to stop tooth decay painlessly.
The liquid is called silver diamine fluoride, or S.D.F. It’s been used for decades in Japan, but it’s been available in the United States, under the brand name Advantage Arrest, for just about a year.
Some patients who have active tooth decay can be eligible for a technique that uses Silver Diamine Fluoride (an FDA-approved material) and is non-invasive. Compared to a traditional filling, this treatment is safer and more comfortable for the patient. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatment can stop tooth decay and also prevent decay in the future.
The main downside is aesthetic: Silver diamine fluoride blackens the brownish decay on a tooth. That may not matter on a back molar or a baby tooth that will fall out, but some patients are likely to be deterred by the prospect of a dark spot on a visible tooth. However, SDF treatment has proven to be a great option for many children who are not ideal candidates for sedation or general anesthesia.
Hello Kids Dentistry is one of the few dental practices to offer this revolutionary treatment option for the management of tooth decay in a fast, affordable and painless manner.
